Procedure Change for Off Hours Shotgun Certifications
Effective immediately the process for off hours shotgun certification has been significantly changed.
Briefly, all new members (or any “old” member never previously shotgun certified) will attend a basic shotgun class known as Shotgun 101 (generally given on the second Saturday of the month at 3pm, check club calendar). Following this they will go to either Trap or Skeet Certification (or potentially both). At Trap and/or Skeet Certification a “Dance Card” will be given to the individual. Trap Certification dates are on the club calendar. Skeet Certification dates will generally be the second Sunday of the month at 4pm (check the calendar). The live fire component to Skeet Certification has been eliminated.
For Trap, there is a list in the gazebo on Field 2 of the names of individuals who will certify an individual by observing them shoot 5 rounds of trap.
For Skeet the Field 6 Safety Officer will observe the individual for a total of 3 rounds (open hours only). You may complete all 3 rounds in one day if you desire.
You MUST HAVE THE CARD and YOUR BADGE to be certified.
After the Skeet Dance Card is filled, it is to be turned in to the shop and the certification sticker will be mailed. The Trap Certification people will give the individual their certification sticker and inform management.
Please note: You should NOT present your Dance Card to the Field 6 Skeet Officer if you are not sufficiently ready. If you have never shot a complete round of skeet or are not confident of the rules of the game, you should practice or get lessons prior to attempting the Dance Card. You do not have to hit a single target but you need to do it safely! If you attempt the Observation and fail, you will be required to complete private lessons at your cost to obtain certification. Theoretically, the Field 6 officer should not have to say a word to you or correct anything to pass you.
Please note: To take the Clays certification class you must first be either Trap or Skeet certified.
Also note: You may skip Shotgun 101, Trap/Skeet Certification and Dance Card by taking private lessons. When a Club Certified Instructor deems it appropriate, he/she may certify you.
Thanks for your patience as we work to improve shotgun safety at the club.
