DCWC hosts an IDPA Pistol Match every Tuesday evening, weather permitting, at 6:30PM. Please try to arrive by 6:00 PM, shooting starts promptly at 6:30 PM and usually ends before 9PM. Help setting up the stages is always appreciated and all shooters are expected to help paste targets. We maintain a mailing list for match announcements, including cancellations, and typically announce matches by 4pm every Tuesday. To be added to the mailing list, click this link or scroll down to the bottom of this page and fill out the form.

All you need to bring is your handgun, preferably 9mm/.38 caliber or larger, at least one, preferably two spare magazines (or speed loaders), magazine holders, a strong-side holster, a good solid belt, and a box or two of ammo. Check the IDPA website at idpa.com for complete rules, equipment lists, and approved firearms. You may wish to come watch a match and check with our regular shooters before investing in equipment.
Both first time competitors and spectators are welcome. Eye and ear protection is mandatory during the entire event for anyone down-range.
In the interest safety and keeping things moving quickly, our matches are lost brass events.
Our IDPA matches tend to be ‘old school’ with simpler scenarios that put an emphasis on safety and building skills. We are fortunate to have other ranges in this area that have world class practical shooting matches every month. See NCSection.Org for a list of area matches. Our match is a great opportunity for beginners to learn new skills and old hands to sharpen theirs. Many of our beginner shooters have gone on to win awards at the Carolina Cup, the NC State Match, and other major matches in nearby states.
The Durham County Wildlife Club is now an authorized IDPA (International Defensive Pistol Association) club.
The International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA) is the governing body of a shooting sport that simulates self-defense scenarios and real life encounters. It was founded in 1996 as a response to the desires of shooters worldwide. The organization now boasts membership of more than 13,500, including members in 36 foreign countries.
One of the unique facets of this sport is that it is geared toward the new or average shooter, yet is fun, challenging and rewarding for the experienced shooter. The founders developed the sport so that practical gear and practical guns may be used competitively. An interested person can spend a minimal amount on equipment and still be competitive.
The main goal is to test the skill and ability of the individual, not equipment or gamesmanship. “Competition only” equipment is not permitted in this sport.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to be a member of IDPA?
- No. IDPA Membership is not required.
Where do you meet?
- Durham County Wildlife Club's Pistol Range. It will be the first range on your right as you drive into the club. We meet downrange around 6:00 PM.
What does the match cost?
- Two DCWC tokens
Are there any rules specific to this venue?
- Yes. You may only holster your handgun while within the designated safe area downrange. Please speak with a range officer before handling any equipment if this is your first event.
How many rounds do I need for a match?
- About 60 typically. We shoot 4 stages, each stage is 12 to 18 rounds. We suggest bringing 100 rounds in case a reshoot of a stage is required. Reshoots may be necessary because of a prop failure, if your score was not recorded, or an RO stopped you in error.
What do I need to have for a match?
- Eye and ear protection. Hat suggested.
- Pistol
- Holster. Appropriate strong side holster that covers the trigger guard completely and holds the pistol securely.
- Three magazines
- 100 rounds of ammo
What time should I arrive?
- 6pm.
Is any holster ok?
- No. It must be a strong-side holster. No small-of-the-back, cross-draw, or shoulder holsters will be permited for safety concerns. The holster must also completely cover the trigger guard. Ideally, we suggest a strong-side, straight-drop kydex holster. We also urge shooters to avoid unsupported IWB holsters and gunshow nylon holsters that loosely fit the pistol. Holsters which utilize a trigger finger retention release (e.g. Serpa holster) are not permitted.
When do you usually finish?
- We strive to complete all 4 stages and end the match by 9pm.
I have a "7 shot revolver" / "CZ SP01" / "ported 1911 compact" / "Glock 17L" / or another handgun that does not meet the equipment rules laid out for IDPA competition. Can I still shoot it at the match?
- Yes, provided all the above safety conditions are met with your gear, you're welcome to come out and shoot with what you own.
